Lake Mills travelled to Sun Prairie East High School to take on the Division 1 #2 ranked Cardinals in a non-conference game. Strong bats and dominant pitching by Ava Kleinfeldt secured the victory for the L-Cats.
Sun Prairie scored the first run when senior pitcher Taylor Baker hit a sac fly to score Abby Packard. In the top of the 5th, Haydenn Sellnow doubled to score Morgan Everson. Ava Kleinfeldt then hit a towering homerun over the left center field fence to bring in two more runs. Lake Mills took the lead for good in the 7th inning. Sellnow, Kleinfeldt, and junior Payton Quest combined to bring in four runs and lock the game away.
Ava Kleinfeldt struck out seven and walked none to earn the win. Taylor Baker took the loss. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits while striking out five and walking three. Offensively, Sellnow, Doerr, Kleinfeldt, and Quest all had two hits with Kleinfeldt and Sellnow getting 3 RBI’s each. Abby Packard led the cardinals with two hits.
“Outside of winning the conference championship for the first time in ’21, this was the biggest, most complete win we’ve had as a school," said Lake Mills Head Coach Jim Clift. "Our team was focused and unafraid of what was before them. We were actually craving this opportunity and we capitalized on it. The reality is, we still have to play every game going forward and as I’ve always told them, we can only do that one pitch at a time”
Lake Mills travels to Oconomowoc HS Saturday for a double header with the first game starting at 12 PM.
